Information on Overseas Citizen of India

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a program that allows people of Indian origin on 26th January 1950 or thereafter, to maintain a lifelong connection with India. The scheme was first launched by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955 in August 2005.

The OCI scheme does not provide full Indian citizenship, but it gives many benefits such as economic, financial, educational facilities and much more. The OCI card is mainly useful for people whose families moved abroad but still want to stay connected with India. However, there are some exceptions, like people with roots in certain countries such as Pakistan or Bangladesh cannot apply for the card.
